What actually moves the Google map pack
January 28, 2026
For a local service business, the map pack is often the most valuable placement on the page. It sits above the organic results, it shows reviews, and it gives someone a call button without another click.
Google weighs three broad things: proximity, relevance, and prominence. You cannot change proximity, so the work is in the other two.
Relevance is mostly profile hygiene. Correct primary category, a complete service list, accurate hours, and a description written for a human. Most profiles we audit were filled in once at setup and never touched again.
Prominence is reviews, citations, and the strength of your website. A steady flow of recent reviews matters more than a large pile of old ones, and responding to every review, including the difficult one, reads well to the next customer who arrives.
The unglamorous truth is that map pack results reward businesses that maintain the profile on a schedule. Photos uploaded regularly, posts published, questions answered. It is not clever, but it is consistent, and consistency is what most competitors will not sustain.
